Objectives

The PIREDD Plateau project builds on the achievements of its first phase (2016–2019) to strengthen sustainable forest management and community resilience in the Mai-Ndombe province. With a focus on local governance, technical innovation, and community ownership, the project promotes climate-smart solutions to reduce deforestation, enhance biodiversity conservation, and improve livelihoods. It targets the protection of over 94,000 hectares of forest, benefitting more than 23,000 rural households, and aims to inject over $4 million into local economies through payments for environmental services, or PES, and improved value chains.

To achieve these objectives, the project seeks to support 214 local development committees, expand agroforestry and perennial crop plantations, and protect key conservation areas, including 75,000 hectares of high-value savannas and forests. It also lays the groundwork for formalising 100,000 hectares of community forest concessions and invests in vital infrastructure—roads, bridges, and market access facilities—to support sustainable development and economic growth across the Plateau district.

Results to date

Between 1 May and 31 December 2024, key activities included setting up the program management teams within UNOPS and finalizing a contract with WWF DRC. Funds from the first tranche were fully allocated to WWF DRC to support the purchase of equipment needed for project implementation. The annual work plan (PTBA) was developed based on the PRODOC framework. The first Steering Committee meeting (COPIL in French) was held on November 1, 2024, marking the official project launch and aligning stakeholders around shared goals and expected outcomes. Consequently, activities directly contributing to the achievement of project indicators and impacts were not carried out during this period.
