Gabon is committed to sustainably managing its forests, which cover over 88% of its national territory, while ensuring that forest-based economic activities deliver both environmental and social benefits. This project supports the implementation of Gabon’s Forest Concessions Transformation Strategy by assisting logging operators in meeting national certification requirements, improving transparency and governance in forest management, and promoting inclusive community forestry models. It aims to strengthen the enabling environment for forest sustainability through legal, institutional and spatial planning reforms.

Objectives

The project seeks to
  • Support the development of two inclusive land-use plans in high-forest-cover areas.
  • Promote sustainable practices in logging concessions.
  • Strengthen community involvement in forest management through six participatory validation workshops.
  • Build national capacity for forest monitoring and spatial planning.

Results to date

As of 31 December 2024,
  • Draft land-use plans developed in two regions.
  • A total of six participatory workshops with local communities were conducted in two target regions to validate draft spatial analyses and integrate local knowledge into land use planning.
  • Mapping of land uses and ecological corridors launched.
  • Legal framework development initiated with Ministry of Forests.
