To support Gabon’s efforts in protecting its forests – by expanding its protected areas network, and optimizing land use for food crop production-  this project sought to contribute to the country’s climate and biodiversity goals, balancing conservation and food security.

Objectives

The project seeks to :
  • Protect carbon-rich and biodiverse forest ecosystems through
    • delimiting at least 1 million ha for high conservation value protection
    • completing participatory mapping in 25+ villages.
  • Reduce pressures on forests by identifying suitable zones for sustainable agricultural production.
  • Resolve land-use conflicts through participatory mapping and planning processes.

Results to date

By 31 December 2024 :
  • Baseline ecological and social studies completed for two future protected areas (Plateaux Batékés and Monts Fouari)
  • High conservation value zones delineated through participatory village mapping conducted in 23 villages. 20,000 ha of high-conservation-value zones identified via mapping
  • Two regional laboratories constructed, equipped for soil, biodiversity, and carbon analysis
  • Roadmap finalised for the legal designation of the Plateaux Batékés protected area.
  • Community engagement expanded through awareness campaigns and a documentary film shown in 20 villages.
  • 4 field training sessions conducted to build local capacity in monitoring and data collection
